Global Internal Audit provides independent, objective assurance to management and the risk and audit committees as to whether the framework of risk management, control, and governance processes, as designed and represented by management, is adequate and functioning.
We are currently seeking a high caliber professional to join our team as a Data Scientist.

In this role, you will

  • The Singapore Innovation Laboratory Data Scientist is responsible for data science based innovation. You shall take a hands on role creating and delivering solutions based upon advanced machine learning methods to the broad stakeholder constituency of the Singapore Innovation Laboratory. You will report to the Singapore Innovation Laboratory Director.
  • HSBC has initiated an Innovation Laboratory in Singapore. The Laboratory shall pioneer innovation in machine learning for control optimization in one of the world's biggest and most complex banks.
  • The program is the first of its kind in a Global Systemically Important Bank. The Laboratory shall innovate and propagate machine learning methods, standards and practices. Working in collaboration with the Monetary Authority of Singapore and Singaporean academia.
  • The Laboratory shall apply machine learning to one of the world's largest and most complex banks in order to better manage the systemic riskiness of it.
  • The Laboratory has been set up by HSBC to address the challenges of optimizing control of the black box, yet the agenda goes much further still. In the Laboratory we shall extend the modalities of real time, continuous, and predictive control holistically and heuristically across the
  • The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate a proven track record of innovative solution delivery that is pragmatic and heuristic
  • Partnering effectively through collaboration with HSBC's other Innovation teams, Technology, Global Businesses and Global Functions to ensure the successful delivery of collaborative, cross Lines of Defense solutions
  • Design, construction, and implementation of a broad range of advanced machine learning models using both linear and non-linear methods
  • Ability to apply math and statistics to solve financial problems
  • Broad and deep understanding of machine learning methods, including: linear regression, linear classification, basis expansions and regularization, kernel smoothing, Bayesian methods, additive models, boosting, and additive trees, neural networks, unsupervised learning, random forests, ensemble learning, dealing with high dimensional problems, deep learning, and reinforcement learning.
  • Delivery in conjunction with internal and external partners, of machine learning solutions in order to realize the bank's collaborative cross Lines of Defense innovation strategy
  • Hands on execution and leadership using machine learning methods, including architecture, design, build, testing and implementation
  • Helping to create an environment that attracts professionals from a diverse background commensurate with the skills required to successful deliver innovation, many of whom might not normally consider a financial institution as a natural career choice.
  • Helping to create an environment in which the team thrives and successfully co-exists

To be successful in this role, you should meet the following requirements

  • Quantitative PhD combined with a can do attitude
  • Banking experience is an advantage, but not a necessity
  • Proven track record delivering machine learning solutions
  • Strong hands on coding skills, particularly Python
    Ability to innovate, demonstrated by past experience
    A mindset that naturally emphasize execution and delivery
  • Prima facie credibility and the ability to interact with and represent the Innovation Lab in broader stakeholder communities
    Commercial discipline, with an ability to deliver real dollar value to stakeholders
  • Good knowledge and experience of risk management and strong risk culture, not limited to a banking environment
  • Ability to understand complex issues, manage conflict and provide pragmatic solutions
  • Ability to manage complex business and stakeholder relationships in a diverse business and cultural setting
  • High standards of professional and personal integrity
  • Good English written and verbal articulation skills
