DESCRIPTION

As part of Amazon's Climate Pledge to reach net zero carbon by 2040, AWS is committed to reducing carbon emissions across our infrastructure, and we are seeking a Senior Sustainability Engineer to drive carbon reduction in the design of our Data Centers across our rapidly expanding APAC portfolio.
As a Senior Sustainability Engineer, you will work closely with the AWS Sustainability team and the Global Design Engineering team to reduce carbon intensity in current and future AWS data centers. You will create mechanisms to identify opportunities for carbon reduction and track their success. Our standard data center solutions are adapted to the many geographies in which we operate and our building materials, structures and equipment are adapted to that local environment, the materials available and the construction techniques and competencies in that market. This provides the potential for specific carbon reduction opportunities on a building by building basis.

We are looking for engineers with hands on practical sustainability experience across the project lifecycle from concept design through construction, to commissioning and handover. You will be relied on as a subject matter expert in the sustainability field. At Amazon we highly support continued learning opportunities and focus on continued employee development. As a Senior Sustainability engineer at Amazon you will be working with other internal groups as well as external groups including utilities, manufacturers, vendors, consultants and contractors.
Amazon has a global presence and following COVID travel restrictions, up to 25% travel will be expected as part of this role. Projects will be throughout the region and a degree of international travel and support will be necessary.
About the team
The Data Center Design Engineering team at Amazon Web Services consists of Architects, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Fire Protection and Controls Engineers working to design the next generation of Data Centres. The team is committed to achieving a world-class uptime for our customers and strives to develop a fleet of buildings emphasizing security, safety, and efficiency, while finding new ways to meet our growing demand. We justify and communicate the technical decisions we make directly to AWS leadership and work hard to drive continuous advancements in our designs. As an integral member of the team, you will have the opportunity to directly impact our business and create positive change.

In this role you will be responsible for:
. Understanding the design and functionality of AWS data centers globally
. Creating and modifying existing mechanisms to track carbon throughout the project life-cycle
. Owning the tracking of carbon for projects within your region -including working directly with our construction team and equipment suppliers to identify opportunities for carbon reduction (with our scale we are able to drive the design of our equipment)
. Identifying project/region specific opportunities to reduce carbon on specific builds
. Propose and develop carbon reduction initiatives to implemented globally across the AWS fleet.
. Owning sustainability certifications for builds in your region as mandated by building permit requirements or AWS policies.
. Supporting our public policy teams in engaging with local authorities on sustainability issues.
. Producing clear and concise documentation such as detailed design specifications, white papers, and reports
. Initiating and driving to completion, sustainability initiatives for our future generations of data center designs.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

. Bachelor's degree in an engineering or sustainability, or equivalent experience
. 8+ years of practical engineering experience
. Practical experience in obtaining, managing, and analyzing carbon data
. Ability to optimize building design to reduce carbon footprint through passive design
. Experience leading sustainable building programs
. Possess leadership and problem-solving skills.
. Be a motivated, highly dependable individual.
. Ability to research new designs, technologies, and construction methods
. An ability and willingness to think outside of the box to find creative and innovative solutions to reduce carbon with minimum impact on cost, quality, reliability, or maintainability.
. The ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions and present the justification to management in a high-level review.
. Possess excellent communication skills, attention to detail, maintain high quality standards.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

. 4+ years of data center specific experience
. Knowledge on carbon technologies, such as Direct Air Capture
. Master's Degree in Sustainability, Environmental Policy or related field
. Experience with design and specification of renewable energy projects
. Practical experience of completing LEED and/or BREAM certifications/GreenMark/Green Star, WELL, NABERS, ISCA
. Knowledge of equipment and systems related to data centers.
. Knowledge of basic statistics, scripting languages or data analytics (python, R, SAS, MATLAB or similar software)
